Ten New Songs is Leonard Cohen's tenth studio album, released in 2001. It was co-written and produced by Sharon Robinson. It was produced in Cohen's and Robinson's home studios in Los Angeles. It was also his first album in nearly 10 years. The album peaked at No 143 on the Billboard 200, No 4 in Canada (where it went platinum), No 1 in Poland (where it went platinum) and No 1 in Norway. «There's a sense of relaxation in the tunes that comes through», the singer enthused to Nick Patton Walsh of The Observer in 2001, «there's a kind of pulse, an invitation to get into it - a groove». Although the album has an adult contemporary, R&B feel, several songs contain themes of unspeakable desolation and loneliness, including «By the Rivers Dark» and the brooding «A Thousand Kisses Deep», reinforce...

While the phrase "hand-to-hand" appears to refer to unarmed combat, the term is generic and may include use of striking weapons used at grappling distance such as knives, sticks, batons, or improvised weapons such as entrenching tools. While the term hand-to-hand combat originally referred principally to engagements by military personnel on the battlefield, it can also refer to any personal physical engagement by two or more combatants, including police officers and civilians. Combat within close quarters (to a range just beyond grappling distance) is commonly termed close combat or close-quarters combat. It may include lethal and non-lethal weapons and methods depending upon the restrictions imposed by civilian law, military rules of engagement, or ethical codes. Close combat using firearms or other distance weapons by military combatants at the tactical level is modernly referred to as close quarter battle. The U.S. Army uses the term combatives to describe various military fighting systems used in hand-to-hand combat training, systems which may incorporate eclectic techniques from several different martial arts and combat sports... Hand-to-hand combat is the most ancient form of fighting known. A majority of cultures have their own particular histories related to close combat, and their own methods of practice. There are many varieties within the martial arts, including boxing and wrestling. Other variations include the gladiator spectacles of ancient Rome and medieval tournament events such as jousting. Military organizations have always taught some sort of unarmed combat for conditioning and as a supplement to armed combat. Soldiers in China were trained in unarmed combat as early as the Zhou Dynasty (1022 BCE to 256 BCE)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_arts Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development. Although the term martial art has become associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, it was originally referred to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. The term is derived from Latin, and means "arts of Mars", the Roman god of war. Some authors have argued that fighting arts or fighting systems would be more appropriate on the basis that many martial arts were never "martial" in the sense of being used or created by professional warriors...

A driver was taken into custody after a wild, hourlong pursuit that began with an alleged road-rage incident in San Gabriel and spanned multiple cities and freeways in Los Angeles County before coming to a dramatic conclusion in Cerritos. The pursuit began on the westbound 10 Freeway at about 11:32 a.m., after the suspect was involved in an alleged act of "highway violence" against a San Gabriel Police Department patrol vehicle, according to CHP Officer Juan Galvan. When officers tried to stop the driver, he took off, California Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt said. San Gabriel police initially pursued the driver before calling CHP to take over, according to Brandt. From San Gabriel, the chase headed west and past downtown Los Angeles, with the suspect eventually exiting the 101 Freeway in Hollywood. At one point, the suspect, who was driving erratically, narrowly missed hitting two pedestrians who were in a crosswalk. He also managed to recover from a PIT maneuver that a CHP SUV performed on a surface street early on in the chase, aerial video showed. The suspect then made his way back to the 101 Freeway headed southbound for downtown. Video from Sky5 showed law enforcement personnel following the white Nissan Rogue SUV, which was weaving in and out of the slow-moving, heavily traveled stretch of the 101 toward downtown L.A.; with traffic at a crawl, he barely missed some cars and appeared to side-swipe at least one vehicle in an aggressive effort to evade police. The pursuit continued through the downtown and into South Los Angeles, where the driver was able to pick up speed on the wide-open 110 Freeway as multiple law enforcement vehicles followed. As the chase headed toward the San Pedro area, the driver exited the freeway and lead pursuing CHP vehicles through Wilmington-area surface streets. Eventually, the suspect drove back onto the 110 Freeway in Carson and headed eastbound on the 91 Freeway into the Long Beach area. While traveling on the 91, he collided with the side of a CHP cruiser on the freeway, aerial footage showed. That didn't deter the driver, who continued driving erratically, Sky5 footage showed. "Each pursuit that we have we treat with extreme caution," Galvan told KTLA when asked about the aggressiveness of the pursuit driver. "There are pursuits where they are like this unfortunately, that happen during the night and it doesn't get attention as it does here. So, we have seen rammings, we have seen the suspects in pursuit be very aggressive in this nature." The chase came to an end around 12:35 p.m. when the driver lost control of the SUV as he exited the eastbound 91 Freeway at Norwalk Boulevard in Cerritos. The vehicle spun out of control and came to stop between some trees and other brush alongside the freeway off-ramp, which was close to several homes, Sky5 video showed. The male driver appeared to exit the SUV on the rear-passenger side before he could be seen running through the brush. The suspect was taken into custody by CHP officers and handcuffed shortly after he fled on foot, the footage showed. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and felony evading, police later said in a statement. He was later taken away in an ambulance, though it was unclear what type of injuries he had received. The driver faced several potential charges, including felony evading and assault on a peace officer, Galvan said. His name has not yet been released. Galvan did not provide any details about the initial incident involving San Gabriel police. In conjunction with Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Sheriff Jim McDonnell announced details and results from the third annual ‘Operation Reclaim and Rebuild’ enforcement operation, conducted by the Los Angeles Regional Human Trafficking Task Force and more than 30 participating federal state and local law enforcement agencies, and task forces from across California. The three-day, statewide effort aimed at combatting human trafficking took place between Thursday, January 26, and Saturday, January 28, 2017, was conducted in various mediums and met with positive results. The press conference was held Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at the iconic Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles. Sheriff McDonnell was joined by District Attorney Jackie Lacey, Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office; Deputy Chief Justin Eisenberg, Chief of Detectives, Los Angeles Police Department; Special Agent In Charge Joseph Macias, Homeland Security Investigations Los Angeles; Executive Director Kay Buck, Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST); Human Trafficking Bureau Captain Chris Marks, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; representatives from 15 the 30 participating federal, state and local law enforcement agencies; and representatives from public and private service providers. Operation Reclaim and Rebuild focused on rescuing victims of sexual slavery and human trafficking, providing victims with much-needed services, identifying and arresting their captors, seeking successful prosecutions, and disrupting the demand for vulnerable victims by targeting their customers. Police agencies and other trafficking task forces throughout our state joined in the enforcement operation to send the clear message that California law enforcement shares a unified mandate: Human trafficking must not be tolerated in our state! In preparation for the event, an operational planning meeting took place in Los Angeles, with over 120 federal, state and municipal law enforcement detectives from all over California in attendance. Investigators focused enforcement operations wherever the trafficking of human beings took place, from confronting the reality of sidewalk prostitution by conducting “john” stings, to challenging the virtual reality of the cyber world where traffickers believe they can operate anonymously using the internet. The internet has furnished a vast variety of opportunities for traffickers, but with the experience of specially-trained cyber detectives who posed as vulnerable teenagers and interacted with suspects on social media, traffickers and customers who were anxious to exploit found their plans foiled. Minors encountered during enforcement efforts were cared for by personnel from various Department of Children and Family Services Agencies in each county. In Los Angeles County, the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST) and Saving Innocence (SI) coordinated the emergency services response for victim care and collaborated with similar, non-governmental victim service organizations throughout the state. Operation Reclaim and Rebuild was widely successful in its endeavor with 28 commercially, sexually-exploited children and 27 adult victims being recovered; 142 males arrested for the charge of Solicitation; and 36 males arrested for pimping. In total, 474 arrests were made. As Sheriff McDonnell relayed the mission, efforts and results of Operation Reclaim and Rebuild, he pointedly addressed the traffickers and johns who conduct their illegal business in Los Angeles County and the state of California, and reminded them of the gravity of their crimes and the prosecution to accompany their actions when discovered. Next, the Sheriff directly addressed the victims, “You are worthy of more. And we will work tirelessly with our partners…to provide you services and help you rebuild your life.” “It is our job in law enforcement to protect children – all children – especially those who have fallen prey to adults who seek to profit from their bodies,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said. “We will not tolerate the sexual exploitation of children by anyone, not the sex traffickers and not the people who pay to sexually assault them.” Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Joseph Macias also spoke at the event said, “Our goal in this unprecedented collaborative enforcement effort was two-fold.” “First, to provide vital services to any sex trafficking victims we encountered, so they can begin to reclaim and rebuild their lives,” he said. “Second, to start the process to reclaim and rebuild the neighborhoods that have been degraded by organized prostitution schemes which not only exploit the vulnerable, but also often draw other criminal enterprises into the area.”

They were about to release their second album, Abraxas, and were riding high on the heels of three hit songs from their debut album and a new Top 10 hit, a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Black Magic Woman." A year earlier - in fact only a few days before the Woodstock Festival - Bill Graham staged the first of several concerts billed as "The Fillmore at Tanglewood." Tanglewood is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the storied venue had just begun to experiment with staging contemporary concerts on their grounds. Staging a rock concert in a classical venue had yet to be done, so of course the concept of doing so excited Graham. He brought the full-scale Fillmore East production team in, including the Joshua Light Show, and booked a great lineup. This first concert featured B.B King, Jefferson Airplane and The Who, and drew the largest crowd that Tanglewood had ever seen by far. Buoyed by the event's success, Tanglewood and Graham agreed to stage three similar dates in 1970. The last of these is this show, when Santana headlined after The Voices of East Harlem and the legendary Miles Davis had played (you can hear Mile's set here). This historic and beautifully recorded performance features a smoking performance by Santana in the last year of their classic lineup, before a young Neal Schon joined the band. We think you'll agree it's an incredible performance by a great band in their prime.

Although the album has an adult contemporary, R&B feel, several songs contain themes of unspeakable desolation and loneliness, including «By the Rivers Dark» and the brooding «A Thousand Kisses Deep», reinforced by the album's contained, almost womb-like feel and sound. Several of the tracks on Ten New Songs existed in some form or another long before they appeared on Cohen's tenth studio album; Cohen first revealed he was working on a new song called «My Secret Life» in 1988, and, in 1995, Melinda Newman of Billboard reported that two tracks, «My Secret Life» and «A Thousand Kisses Deep», were «close to completion...» (I would add «Here It Is») «I’d like to have a very intimate kind of record», the singer confided to Newman at the time, «of a very different nature than actual songs». «In My Secret Life», a song that wound up being an ode to unrequited love, became the album's first single with an accompanying music video that was filmed in Montreal at Habitat 67. «I'm back on Boogie Street», declares Leonard Cohen on two different songs in this collection, titled with characteristic understatement Ten New Songs. (Previous album titles have included Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, and Recent Songs.) More poet than musician, Cohen has, since his early albums, tended to rely on collaborations with musicians to put together his music. On Ten New Songs, his partner is former backup singer Sharon Robinson, who co-wrote «Everybody Knows» on 1988's I'm Your Man and earns co-writing credit on all the material here. She has also conjured the musical backgrounds, and she harmonizes with Cohen throughout. But all collaborators (even Spector) are in the service of Cohen's poetic vision, which remains the dominant element on this elegiac set. After a restatement of purpose on «In My Secret Life», he turns in a moody set of reflections on decline, even alluding to fellow poet Robert Frost's famous «Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening» in «A Thousand Kisses Deep» (AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann) Leonard Cohen - Ten New Songs [2001] (Full Album) Tracklist: 1.
